How do we view complex types if visualization tool doesn't support them?

With the use of complex types, how do we effectively view data in these complex types if visualization layer does not support them?

How efficient is flattening? Would storing them in flattened project not just be a waste of resources (etl should have flattened them to begin with).

why not expose them in a view? Ideally whatever is querying the data will significantly reduce the rows returned
