How can I correlate "merge phase X" messages in the logs with a specific process? — Vertica Forum

How can I correlate "merge phase X" messages in the logs with a specific process?

We have been seeing messages like this during periods where Vertica is responding particularly slowly: 2013-05-26 09:01:38.816 nameless:0x2aab3caa78c0 [EE] Beginning intermediate merge phase 1: 346 buffers to merge in increments of 19. The session IDs for these events don't seem to correspond to anything else. Are these tuple mover events? Is there any way to determine which specific processes these messages are being generated by?

  • Bumping this since we just ran into it again. Still not sure what these messages mean.

The log lines are not related with Merge out. Generally merge out logs would have tags like "[TM] " in place of "[EE] ". So these lines are related with some other Vertica internal process or may be logging something about WOS level activity.
  • What internal process other than the tuple mover would be merging down so much data as to put CPU load on the cluster?
