Vertica on Amazon AWS installation guide may need update on Security Group setting
Just installed Vertica 6.1.3 using the Community AMI on AWS. I followed the Vertica on AWS guide as close as I can:
https://my.vertica.com/docs/6.1.x/HTML/index.htm#19461.htm
But first attempt failed. After digging in some more, here is what I found:
To make "ping" work, it is not enough just adding ICMP/"Echo" to the VPC's security group. You have to open ALL ICMP traffic. Otherwise you can't ping peer nodes within that VPC.
Secondly, AWS used to have the higher ports 48073 and up open by default. At least that is what I remembered. This time around, you have to add ALL TCP traffic for ports 48073 - 65536. I added UDP as well.
After those two changes, the installation worked smoothly.
