Unable to change IPs of cluster nodes in database

While testing the Vertica 7 Community Edition I have it set up on 3 VMs on ESXi. it has occured that the IPs of two of these nodes have gotten changed. I have edited the admintools.conf and /etc/hosts files (not using spread), and also updated all SSH keys. However, the docs say that I need to "start a single node", then update an internal table. However, I cannot get anything to start - only get: "Unable to SSH as dbadmin to : Unexpected EOF" I have verified that from the command line all SSH connections work between the nodes, both as root and dbadmin, so I am guessing this is from within the DB itself that these IPs are coming from. how does one start a single node of a 3 node cluster?
