Vertica supports Ubuntu 12.04. Ubuntu 14.04 has been out for just a few weeks. (And I was running it personally when it first came out -- nice stuff, but had some early rough edges that they had to fix.) Vertica hasn't yet been updated for it.
If you can, I'd suggest using an Ubuntu 12.04 VM instead.
Or just use one of the pre-packaged VM's on our Downloads page -- not as nice as Ubuntu, but they're preinstalled with Vertica so you'd have less to set up.
If you need to get Vertica working in this particular VM, note that it's not (yet) supported. That said, it's reasonably likely to work reasonably well for basic testing purposes. I probably shouldn't comment on the subject directly, but there are various posts on this and other forums about how to unofficially override the Vertica installer script's OS version check.

It is hard to give answer without looking in to details of your setup.
I recently wrote a blog post on instaling vertica 8.0.0 on ubuntu 14.04.
Feel free to look in through.
Hopefully it will give you idea on some missing step.
