failed to add nodes to database Node already exists

I had to add 4 new nodes.  Three were added successfully  but on one I am getting "failed to add nodes to database Node already exists" after an earlier failed attempt.  How do I cleanup the metadata?  When I query select * from nodes, I do see the old node there even after running 

/opt/vertica/sbin/update_vertica --remove-hosts
