How resultbuffersize works?

I'm trying to test resultbuffersize field and I'm not sure I understand this field

 

does it have any effect if I run a single query per connection?

If I reduce the number of resultbuffersize to 1 bytes, does it means that I will get a smaller result set and then I'll need to request another chunk? or is it something internal in Vertica?
