Protect privacy data in Vertica

My prospect customer has a requirement to protect private data which is uploaded from mobile. I think SecureData (Voltage) is one of options. But it is too expensive! How do other similar customers tackle with this requirement? Do we have any best practice and use case for this requirement? E.g. Tokenization, encryption, data masking and so on.

I know one customer that uses in encryption package with small modification and it's good enough for him.
