Equivalence of variables in Vertica

hi , i have a background on sql server and recently got an opportunity to work with vertica. i was wondering if there is a way to declare variables and eventually embed them in a stored procedure and schedule them. would like to take baby steps for now and check how to initialize variables, set for them and then use them in my script for now. any help would be gladly appreciated.
