What is this error "String of 16 octets is too long for type Char(3) for column ~~"??

I Insert a 3 length's data into ws_1depth_code column and this column's data type is char(3)
then i can see the message
"String of 16 octets is too long for type Char(3) for column ws_1depth_code)"

What's the matter with this case?
