Vertica as reporting tool (not for analytics)?

I know vertica is very good for Analytics but i am working on some POC to use vertica as Reporting tool only to replace SQL Server but so far results are not great.

 

Its  column oriented storage will not help to retrive all/selected columns for the reports. Also when we need to get data near to real time we will also have isuses with DML operations on primary server. 

 

Any thoughts/suggestions ? Anyone has used Vertica for pure reporting only ?

You do not mention what  type of  problem you have   , I guess its  query performances  . Its hard to answer such question without real use case and sample query   , also the DML comment is not clear .

Thinks you can consider :

• Take a look on GROUPED column design https://my.vertica.com/docs/7.0.x/HTML/Content/Authoring/SQLReferenceManual/Statements/column-name-listTable.htm this in general can transform columnar store to  RAW base .
• Projection design is key for your success

But as general statement , Vertica is  not ideal  for query’s that return very large result set
