use same vertica vm after OS change
Hi,
I have installed CE Vertica in my laptop with Windows 10 64-bit. It is working fine.
I have installed it under the folder C:\KITS\Vertica
To start VM I usually run "Vertica Community Edition - 9.1.0-0.vmx" from VMware Player.
Now, I am planning to re-image my system to Windows 7 or Windows 8 64-bit.
My question is, if I take backup of C:\KITS\Vertica and restore it back after O/S re-install, will that work fine with same state ? or I need to re-install Vertica again ? Please clarify.
Thanks,
-Anand

Anand,
This is more a VMWare question than a Vertica one, but here's a few pieces of info that should help.
The Vertica VM doesn't care what OS you are running the player on, so changing out Windows versions should have no impact on the Vertica VM itself.
The important questions to ask in the context of VMWare are:
1) Can you do a Windows Explorer copy of the VM player's structure for the VM and restore it and have it work.
A) from the article below it seems that is possible using VMWare Player snapshots or Windows Explorer.
https://www.sevenforums.com/virtualization/335145-how-create-backups-vmware-player.html
b) Assuming the VM structure requires the exact same version of VM player to be installed under the new OS, is the player version you are currently using supported on older Windows versions.
A) you can find that info on this VMWare page
https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=software&details=1&releases=397&operatingSystems=51&productNames=3&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc&testConfig=16
I hope it helps.
Yes, I just copied the folder C:\KITS\Vertica to new laptop and everything is working as it was earlier. All my objects and work is saved and available now.
Thanks.
